OUR HISTORY

1981: A Turbulent Election

After a McAllen Mayoral election filled with hostility in 1981, there was a widespread concern that the community was more divided than ever. Trust on all sides of politics had been shattered.

An Opportunity for Unity

Fortunately, not everyone got lost in the noise of the debate. Dr. Charles Wilson, Danny Boultinghouse, and Joseph Garza saw the crisis as an opportunity to unite the city of McAllen once again. Over several months, they explored programs across the Lone Star State and the nation. They met with community and business leaders and embarked on a risky process filled with potential.

The Birth of Leadership McAllen

They discovered an idea that resonated within their local communities, and this idea evolved into what we now know as Leadership McAllen. What started as an initiative to unite a divided McAllen has grown into a leadership launchpad that continues to shape our community.

40 Years of Impact

Over the past 40 years, our outstanding network of alumni has truly demonstrated the power of connecting business, education, healthcare, and civic leaders. They have shown what can be achieved when these key sectors come together.

A Transformative Program

The Leadership McAllen curriculum is designed to equip class members with the tools to develop their leadership skills while gaining a deeper understanding of what makes our community thrive. Participants gain “behind the scenes” insights, including unique opportunities for open communication with key players in government and the private sector.

Commitment to the Community

Graduates have, and continue to, enhance the quality of life for the citizens of McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley by serving on the City Commission, Public Utility Board, and City Advisory Boards, as well as taking on leadership roles in nonprofits and religious organizations.
